Impossible

Impossible.com is a certified B-corp: a collective of designers, artists and engineers who try and solve problems and address social issues, co-founded by Lily in 2011.

The purpose driven innovation group and incubator is building products and designing businesses for the future using Planet Centric Design.

Impossible began as a platform (a social network and app) allowed users to post what they could offer, and what they needed help with, to encourage people to help one another. It grew out of the idea that technology could be used to grow community through the gift economy, which the UK Government says it already bigger than GDP. After operating for several years and serving over 100,000 users around the planet, the platform is now closed, but the code is free and open source: available here.

“The hard-won truth is that you don’t need a fancy piece of technology to enable community. It is created through sharing, kindness, and realizing our mutual interdependence. There are no barriers to entry. “

Lily writes about her experience of building this community, and all the sociological, psychological and anthropological research that points to collaboration as a central pillar of both sustainability and happiness - and our evolutionary instincts - in Chapter 11 of her book, Who Cares Wins.

Wild Rubber

Rubber comes from trees. Wild rubber comes from wild trees throughout the Amazon. For hundreds of years rubber has been tapped by indigenous communities spread throughout the rainforest. However since rubber is now cheaper to produce on plantations, for a long time it has been difficult for locals to make a living from wild rubber. It is easier for them to make a living from practices that depend on deforestation. So the mission of the Wild Rubber Association is to make wild rubber’s value appreciated. And so that one day the forest will become worth more standing than it is worth cut down.

Wild Rubber is an independent, open and collaborative project that seeks to increase the value of wild rubber to local tappers through developing new products, and creating partnerships with existing brands to source this material.
