Who Cares Wins

season 21 august 2022episode 12

Mother Earth has a fever, and we are in her womb

…and just like that we have finished Series 2 of Who Cares Wins. This season sought to look at some of the social roots underneath the climate crisis - from women’s equality to paternal rights; from Mother Earth to capitalism. What a journey it has been: from LA to the Atacama Desert… from the Amazon Rainforest to Afghanistan. Lily welcomed some incredible voices onto the podcast from Indigenous Activist Nemonte Nenquimo to Comedian Podcaster Deborah Frances White; political commentator Douglas Murray to International Climate Diplomat, Christiana Figueres. Join Lily as she looks back at highlights from each episode, teases out common - and differing - messages, and identifies key solutions voiced, to protect the planet we love.

“Mother Earth has a fever, and we are in her womb."

Zarifa Ghafari: Fighting for Women's Rights amongst Conflict & War

Zarifa - one of Afghanistan’s youngest female mayors to ever be elected, had to flee the country to Germany last year when the Taliban regained power. She's been tirelessly advocating for women’s rights in a country with one of the highest gender gaps between men and women globally.

She is someone who has defied the odds to reach her leadership position but it has not been without sacrifice - she survived 4 assassination attempts, 1 which ultimately killed her Father, General Abdul Wasi Ghafari.

The music you will hear throughout is from The Zohra Orchestra : Afghanistan’s first all-female orchestra, named after the music goddess in Persian writings and who performed at Davos in 2017.

“I never question my work. The way I am working is the only solution for the country. We can’t go to another war.”

Nemonte Nenquimo: Saving the Amazonian Rainforest & Fighting for Indigenous Rights

Nemonte Nenquimo is a Waorani woman, mother and leader, who has dedicated her life to the defence of Indigenous ancestral territory and cultural survival in the Amazon rainforest. She is the co-founder of the Indigenous-led nonprofit organisation Ceibo Alliance and its sister organisation Amazon Frontlines, the first female president of the Waorani organisation of Pastaza province, winner of the Goldman Environmental Prize for Central and South America, the United Nations’ Champions of the Earth Award, BBC 100 Women of 2020 and TIME 100 most influential people in the world.

And the ultimate environmental award… Nemonte had a brand new Ecuadorian Lizard species named after her.

“I ask anyone who’s listening to this message right now to be strong, be courageous, and to join our case. Our struggle as indigenous people is protecting life on earth but we can’t do it alone.”

Douglas Murray: War on the West and Challenging Identity Politics

Today Lily wants to take a more radical turn on this season’s topic, and share her conversation with renowned political commentator and Author, Douglas Murray. He has written several best selling books - such as The Madness of Crowds, and his most recent book, The War on the West and has been critical of our culture’s increasing focus on gender and race as a way to understand our history and ourselves - which he believes to be dividing our society.

Is it possible to recognise the issues of race, gender, class and how they connect with inequities today - whilst not fuelling further division in society - but rather focusing on solutions towards the fairer world so many of us want to see?

“There’s enough of people from different political sites talking about each other. Why don’t they talk to each other? Why don’t we learn from each other? Why don’t we try to develop some trends?”

– Douglas Murray –

Will McDonald: Fatherhood Part 2 & Why equality for Fathers will help us all

Continuing our conversations on Fatherhood this week, Lily chats to Will McDonald from the Father's Institute. They describe themselves as the 'Father's think and do tank'.  Will is so insightful into the reasons why having a male influence/ figure in a child's life will not only benefit the Father- child relationship but exponentially help the Mother as well; from helping with breastfeeding, giving equal paternity rights and for their own mental health and wellbeing. A fascinating listen!

“What is good masculinity? What is your masculinity in service of and similarly, what is your feminity? Because masculine and feminine are not the same as male and female.”

Chris Sweeney: Fatherhood Part 1 & Being Queer/ Male Allyship

A delightful conversation to share with you today with Podcast royalty, Chris Sweeney. So far in this series of Who Cares Wins, we've heard many different female perspectives and in these next few epsiodes I want to dig into the male experience - of being queer, of Fatherhood, acknowleding privilige and why equality will benefit us all…

Chris has taken the podcasting world by storm. Having founded the smash hit Homospaiens Podcast with Will Young, Chris Sweeney now hosts solo, inviting all conversations from the LGBTQ+ community, looking at the world from a queer perspective.

“The pressure on straight CIS men to perform as straight CIS men is just as real as it is for queer men. They’re too busy trying to hold up the walls of some weird man image they’re supposed to uphold”

Chelsea Clinton & Vanessa Nakate -  Impact on Women on the Ground

Lily speaks to two globally influential women today. First, Chelsea Clinton, born into a political dynasty, daughter of Bill and Hillary,  and now global health advocate. They discuss the impact of climate change disaster on existing gender inequalities in the USA, before we hear from the wonderful Ugandan youth activist Vanessa Nakate-  who's country is hugely impacted by  the effects of climate change. In 2021 she was named on the Time100 list and appeared on the cover…

"This system is one that chooses whose voice matters and whose voice does not, who gets to suffer and who doesn’t get to suffer. We have to dismantle the system if we want to see just climate action.”

Christiana Figueres: On Female Leadership

What would be the environmental impact of having more women in positions of political leadership? Joining Lily today to explore this question amongst others, is a woman who has created monumental changes across the globe. Christiana Figueres has been at the forefront of international environmental policy, including as the lead negotiator of the Historic 2015 Paris Climate Agreement. Christiana is a Costa Rican diplomat; the co-founder of Global Optimism; and co-host of the Outrage and Optimism podcast.

“Women are primarily the ones that have these creative innovative ways to adapt to climate change, probably because they’re directly affected. And so they figure out… how do we adapt?”

Amika George: On Period Poverty & Activism

This week we look at some of the barriers to girl’s equal access to education and family planning. Joining Lily is an inspirational young activist from the UK. Outraged by the idea that one in ten girls were missing out on their education due to 'Period Poverty’, at the age of 17, Amika George started the #freePeriods Campaign. An activist, a change maker and author of 'Make it Happen', it's no surprise that she won Spotlight of the Year at Vogue Women of The Year 2021.

We also hear from Douce Namwezi N'ibmba in  Central Africa who is helping educate women on family planning and making menstrual products accessible for women in East Africa through her work with Uwezo Africa.

“It will be my children (if I have children) who will feel the consequences of the decisions that politicians and governments make now.”

Dr Katharine Wilkinson: Could Gender Equality Save Our Planet?

Joining Lily today is climate change veteran, Dr Katharine Wilkinson and we ask, why is the fight for gender equality essential if we want to mitigate climate change?

Katharine is an author, strategist, teacher, and one of 15 “women who will save the world” according to Time magazine. She is co-founder and executive director of the All We Can Save Project, co-host of the podcast A Matter of Degrees and was the lead author on the world renowned Project Drawdown and Drawdown Review.

“It’s not just a nice idea that gender equality and climate are connected. No, they absolutely are connected and increasingly so.”
